Brief Introduction
Wannan Medical College is located in Wuhu, a historic city enjoying the fame of “the giant port along Yangtze River and the core city of Anhui Province”. The college grew out of Wuhu Medical Vocational School that was founded in 1958 and merged into Anhui Medical College in 1971 and functioned as its branch in South Anhui. The college was named when authorized to found itself by the State Council in 1974 and was accredited to award Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council in 1981. In 1998, the college was qualified for the undergraduate teaching assessment by the Ministry of Education and was rated as excellent level in 2008.
Wannan Medical College, occupying an area of 484,400 square meters, comprises three campuses: Binjiang campus, Zhelu campus and Yinhu campus. At present, there are over 4800 faculties and medical staff and over 26000 students, among which 17000 are full-time graduates, undergraduates and junior college students and 9000 are part-time adult students.
The college offers 26 specialties for undergraduates with one national-level characteristic specialty and nine provincial-level characteristic specialties, containing medical science, science, engineering, management, economics and jurisprudence. The college is authorized to grant master’s degree to postgraduates in the field of four level-one academic subjects and grant five professional master’s degree, which on the whole cover academic learning in both preclinical and clinical medicine. It owns four national quality projects, two key disciplines at provincial-level, one “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” key discipline of traditional Chinese medicine authorized by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, seven “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” national key clinical specialties and national key clinical specialties (Nurture). It owns one provincial-level key laboratory, one provincial-level key research base of humanities and social science, one provincial-level engineering technology research center, one third-level laboratory authorized by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, one national-level general practitioners clinical training base and one national clinical drug trial center. The college publishes two academic journals: The Journal of Wannan Medical College and Chinese Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
At present, the college has 141 practical teaching bases, three of which are direct-affiliated (The First and The Second Affiliated Hospitals and The Affiliated Dental Hospital under construction), six are non-direct-affiliated and ten are clinical (nursing) colleges. With the increasingly development of our students practical ability, we are honored to win four grand and first prizes in national medical colleges and universities students skills competitions. The talent training quality has been improved steadily with the graduate employment rate maintains over 97% per year, ranking high among all schools of higher learning in Anhui Province.
At present, nearly 800 staff member have got senior professorship title and 87% full-time teachers have acquired doctorate and master’s degree. In recent years, fifteen teachers have successively been awarded National Outstanding Teacher, Provincial Outstanding Teacher and Provincial Model Teacher titles. The college owns thirty-nine teachers receiving government special subsidy, one member honored as provincial discipline top-notch personnel, one member as New Century Outstanding Talents by Ministry of Education, five members as provincial academic and technology leading figures, twelve members as provincial academic and technology reserve figures, nine members as potential provincial youth discipline leaders and eleven as provincial outstanding youth backbone teachers.
Adhering to the school motto “Exquisite Medical Skills, Noble Virtues, Truth-seeking Spirit, Unyielding Personality”, the college is devoting itself to the cultivation of high qualified, innovative and applied talents. In the new era, the college has set its development objective of “growing into a teaching and research-oriented, local featured high level university” with the continuously improvement of its comprehensive strength and core competitiveness. All the school affairs are developing with stability and moving forward with innovation, showing a sound momentum of rapid development.
